The German Society was founded in 1987 and has been successful in providing a useful network of contacts for its dispersed and very varied membership. To keep in touch with our members we issue a newsletter about four times a year and have a web presence on this CIoL-GS site; we are also linked to the main CIoL site at: http://www.iol.org.uk/
.
We start the year with our AGM in March and make the most of this get-together by combining it with a Members' Session where language and other issues of interest are discussed.
.
An annual event is the Anglophoner Tag. This is held jointly with four other language organisations (ITI German Network, Deutscher Terminologie-Tag, Aticom, BDÜ Hesse) and organised in rotation by each of the five. It was our turn in 2001 and 2006. The former was held in Berlin, with a variety of talks on language topics, the latter in Munich, solely concentrating on the translation of patents, with invaluable support from the European Patent Office. Both were extremely well attended.
.
Another fixture is our Study Weekend, usually in September. For this we meet in different regions of Germany and beyond, again of course concentrating on a language topic. For example, we have visited various places where a recognised minority language is widely spoken, such as Bautzen (Sorbian), Flensburg (Danish), Wismar ( Plattdeutsch ). We also explored Swiss German ( Schwyzerdütsch ), Luxemburgish ( Lëtzebuergesch ) and the language situation/integration in Frankfurt (Oder) on the German-Polish border.
.
In November we traditionally hold a Translators' Workshop in conjunction with the BDÜ Hesse, part of the largest German association for Translators and Interpreters.
.
All our events also contain a certain social element to get to know one another and benefit from shared views and experience.
.
The German Society is always happy to welcome newcomers. Please contact us via email.
